Two students from the Michuki Technical Training Institute  drowned in the swollen waters of Mathioya River, after an adventure to a local waterfall turned into a tragedy on Sunday afternoon.

Residents of Iyego where the incident happened, say that the two students were part of a group of friends who had hiked to the Karuuga waterfalls for an adventure, which later on turned out to be tragic.

According to the eye witnesses, an unidentified female student slipped while attempting to take a photo, plunging into the raging waters of the swollen Mathioya River.

Another yet to be identified male student is said to have jumped into the river in a bid to save the girl, but was swept away by the raging waters.

However, efforts to rescue the two were not fruitful as of Sunday evening and efforts to retrieve their bodies dead or alive are expected to resume today Monday January, 2022.
